Quitting vaping is hard enough. Quitting when your whole group still vapes? That's playing on hard mode. Every hangout, every car ride, every party comes with a cloud and someone holding one out to you.

Here's the good news: you can quit and keep your friends. It just takes a plan for the social stuff, not only the nicotine. This guide covers what to say, how to handle parties, and what to do with your hands when everyone else is hitting theirs.

You're less alone than it feels

When everyone around you vapes, it feels like everyone vapes. But zoom out. In 2025, 7.1% of US high school students said they currently vape, according to the National Youth Tobacco Survey. The Partnership to End Addiction points out that teens tend to overestimate how many of their peers vape.

And here's the part nobody says out loud: most students who vape want to quit. In a 2020 national survey reported by CDC, 63.9% of middle and high school students who vaped said they wanted to stop. So there's a real chance at least one of your friends is quietly hoping someone else goes first.

What to say when someone offers you a hit

Smokefree Teen's advice is to keep it simple and direct, and to practice your line before you need it. Pick one that sounds like you:

Situation What you can say
Someone offers casually "No thanks, I quit."
They offer again "I'm good. I'm on a streak and I'm not breaking it."
They push or tease "Not my thing anymore. Anyway, did you see...?" (change the subject)
A close friend asks why "I was tired of needing it all the time. Can you help me out and not offer for a while?"
You want an easy out "Can't, I've got practice / a test / my parents check."
Someone hands it to you without asking Just pass it on and keep talking. No speech needed.

You don't owe anyone a TED talk. A short, confident "no" with eye contact works better than a long explanation, and after the first few times, most people stop asking.

Handling parties and hangouts

Social situations are some of the biggest vaping triggers: seeing someone vape, smelling it, being offered a new flavor, even studying with friends who vape. Here's how to handle them, especially in the first few weeks:

  1. Plan before you go. Decide your "no thanks" line, who you'll stick with, and when you'll leave.
  2. Skip the most vape-heavy spots for a while. Smokefree Teen suggests taking a temporary break from places where people vape. Tell friends you're avoiding the situation, not them.
  3. Suggest other plans. Movies, gaming, sports, food, the gym. Anything where vaping isn't the main event.
  4. Bring a non-vaping friend or your quit buddy if you can.
  5. Keep your hands busy. Hold a drink in your vape hand. Chew gum.
  6. Have an exit plan. If a craving gets loud, step outside for air, text someone, or head home early. Leaving isn't losing.

Also worth doing: unfollow accounts that post vape content. Scrolling past vape tricks and ads is a trigger too.

Telling your friends you're quitting

You don't need a big announcement. A quick "Hey, I'm quitting vaping, so don't offer me any for a bit" does the job. Being specific about what helps makes it easier for friends to support you, whether that's not offering, not vaping right next to you, or texting you when you're struggling.

Some friends will be great about it. Some won't get it. If someone keeps pushing, Smokefree Teen suggests reminding yourself why you're quitting, asking them to respect your decision, and spending more time with people who make you feel good about it. That can feel awkward, but anyone who keeps shoving a vape at you after you've said no isn't really looking out for you.

Find a quit buddy

Quitting with someone is a game changer. You've got a person to text at 11pm when a craving hits, someone to leave the party with, and someone who gets exactly what day 3 feels like.

Where to find one:

  • A friend who's also over it. Ask. You might be surprised who says yes.
  • A sibling, cousin, or teammate who doesn't vape and can be your accountability person.
  • An online quit community. Truth Initiative's EX Program is free for anyone 13+ (text EXPROGRAM to 88709) and includes an online community. The Escape the Vape app also has a community of people quitting at the same time as you.

What to do with your hands (and mouth)

Here's the sneaky part of social vaping: it's not just nicotine. It's something to do with your hands when conversation dies, something to pass around, a reason to step outside. When you quit, that gap shows up fast.

Fill it on purpose:

  • Hold a drink in the hand you used to vape with.
  • Sugar-free gum or mints keep your mouth busy.
  • Take a slow breath with a long exhale. Smokefree Teen recommends breathing in slowly through your nose and out slowly through your mouth, 10 times, until the craving passes.
  • A breathing necklace like The Escape Necklace gives you a familiar hand-to-mouth motion. You exhale slowly through a stainless steel mouthpiece instead of taking a hit. No nicotine, nothing to inhale, and it just looks like jewelry.

If you're 18 or older and cravings feel unmanageable, nicotine patches, gum, and lozenges are available over the counter. If you're under 18, you'd need a prescription, so talk to your doctor.

If your friendships shift

Real talk: if you quit and your friends don't, some friendships might change. Smokefree Teen calls this out directly: being ready for those changes, some good and some bad, helps. Remember that you and your friends have way more in common than vaping. The friends who matter will still be there when you're not holding a vape.

If you slip at a party

It happens. One hit at a party doesn't wipe out your progress. Smokefree Teen's advice: treat it as a temporary setback, figure out what set it off, and plan what you'll do differently next time. Then get right back to it. If you want help bouncing back, check out what to do if you relapsed.

You can quit and keep your people

It's going to feel weird at first. Then one day you'll be at a hangout, someone will offer, you'll say "nah, I'm good," and you'll realize you didn't even think about it. That's the goal. Every party you get through vape-free makes the next one easier. You've got this.
